Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind
Salt Lake City, Utah

“SIGHTS AND SOUNDS” was commissioned by the Utah Public Art Program for the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind’s new C. Mark Openshaw Education Center. The semi-abstract frieze composition includes depictions of activities typical of the students and staff of the school. Also incorporated into the design are large American Sign Language (ASL) hand shapes and oversized braille lettering that spells out “Utah School for the Deaf and Blind”.

The relief which spans the Western wall of the gymnasium is also viewable from the entrance lobby of the school. The metal sculpture was fabricated in 15 separate overlapping sections in my Michigan studio and transported to Salt Lake City for installation.
